MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Iraqi Kurdistan fully supports Russian efforts to defeat the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) terrorist group, the Iraqi Kurdistan prime minister's adviser told Sputnik Kurdistan.
"The forces that oppose this [ISIL] threat, have our full support. We believe that Russian fight against Daesh [Arabic name for IS] is important and effective. The Kurdish forces also conduct large-scale operations against jihadists. We believe that Russia will play an important role in resolving the Syrian crisis," Mustafa Sefik said.
Sefik added that the extremist group was posing threat to the entire world, not just the Middle East.
Daesh, outlawed in many countries including Russia, is operating mainly in Iraq and Syria and has carried out attacks in other countries.
Russia had been conducting an aerial campaign against Daesh positions in Syria since September 30 at the request by Syrian President Bashar Assad. On March 15, Russia began withdrawing the largest bulk of its military from Syria after accomplishing its objectives.
