The Mexican authorities are investigating over 30 people in connection with the so-called Panama Papers leak.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The Mexican authorities are investigating over 30 people in connection with the so-called Panama Papers leak, head of the country’s tax administration service (SAT) Aristoteles Nunez said.

SAT launched an investigation in relation to the recent allegations that linked dozens of politicians and public figures to offshore schemes earlier this month.

German Tax Officials Knew About Panama Papers Allegations a Year Ago
Nunez said on Wednesday that Mexico was investigating 33 people in connection with the Panama Papers leak specifying, however, that these individuals could be pardoned if their finances were acquired legally and if the funds can be returned to Mexico.

On Sunday, the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung exposed the alleged involvement of a number of former and current world leaders in offshore schemes by publishing materials it claimed came from Mossack Fonseca, a Panama firm selling offshore companies.

Mossack Fonseca has refused to validate the information contained in the leaks and accused reporters of gaining unauthorized access to its proprietary documents. It warned that using unlawfully-obtained data was a crime that it would not hesitate to punish by legal means.
