STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) — The Swedish prosecutors charged a 20-year-old man on Thursday with plotting to carry out a terrorist attack in the country, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
"He acquired liquids and objects with the intent of creating a suicide bomb. The prepared criminal act could have had serious consequences for Sweden," prosecutor Ewamari Haggkvist was quoted as saying in the statement.
In June 2015, the man was twice detained in Turkey and deported back to Sweden. According to the prosecutor, the 20-year-old intended to travel on to Syria to join the Islamic State extremist group, outlawed in a number of countries worldwide, including Russia.
The man was arrested in February after purchasing the substances to prepare explosives.
