WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The United States has allocated additional $155 million in humanitarian aid to Iraq, the US State Department announced in a press release on Friday.

“Today, Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the United States is providing nearly $155 million in additional humanitarian assistance to displaced and conflict-affected Iraqis within Iraq and throughout the region who are in urgent need of support,” the release said.

The State Department explained that the latest support is aimed at providing for the urgent needs of the vulnerable population in the country — to help offer shelter, protection, water and sanitation, health care, and other vital food and non-food items.

“In addition to assisting conflict-affected Iraqis within Iraq, UNHCR also assists Iraqi refugees living in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Syria,” the release added.

According to the State Department, the total humanitarian aid to Iraq since 2014 now amounts to more than $778 million. Washington has also urged the international community to support Iraq.
