The US Consulate General in Istanbul warned US tourists being in Turkey of a high level of possible terrorist threat amid recent events.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The US Consulate General in Istanbul issued a warning to US citizens on Saturday, cautioning of a credible threat facing people visiting touristic places in Turkey.

"The U.S. Mission in Turkey would like to inform U.S. citizens that there are credible threats to tourist areas, in particular to public squares and docks in Istanbul and Antalya. Please exercise extreme caution if you are in the vicinity of such areas. For your personal safety, we urge you to monitor local media," the consulate said in an emergency message published on its website.

The message followed Friday's warning issued by Israeli National Security Council, urging Israeli citizens to avoid visiting Turkey due to a high risk of terrorist attacks. Earlier in April, Russia's Foreign Ministry also advised Russian citizens against visiting Turkey.

Turkey has been hit by a number of terrorist attacks in recent months, as it is struggling to deal the threat from the Daesh terrorist group, banned in Russia among other countries, and fighting against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, the Kurdish pro-independence organization considered to be terrorist by Ankara.
