Venezuelan President Maduro has called on his countrymen to give up air conditioners and hairdryers for 60 days as part of an effort to save electricity as the prolonged drought in the country has pushed water levels at hydroelectric power plants to a critical threshold.

Venezuela is trying to cope with the drought caused by a weather phenomenon known as El Niño, a warm weather event which typically affects the Pacific Coast of Latin America.

President Maduro has called on all his countrymen to participate in his 60-day plan to save electricity, which will ease the burden on the country’s hydro-generation plants.
