A few months earlier, representatives of the German Left Party officially asked the German Government to comment on the project, in particular, on the issue of its compliance with anti-Russian sanctions and the interests of the transit countries.
In response, members of the ruling coalition emphasized that the pipeline is a "solely commercial" project, which would help German entrepreneurs, strengthen German and European energy security as well as contribute to the diversification of gas supplies.
Moreover, they stated that the German government has no right to access relations between third countries and stressed that sanctions against Russia are related to another issue and can't affect the construction of the pipeline.
Some European countries, like Poland and Slovakia opposed the project over fears it would increase European energy dependence on Russia.
Moreover, Ukrainian PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk complained that the new pipeline would deprive Ukraine of about $ 2billion in revenue. Earlier, he appealed to the European Union with a request to abandon the project because it does not meet Ukrainian interests.
