Breaking the Ice: UK Submarines May Return to Arctic
08:07 GMT 10.04.2016 (Updated: 10:43 GMT 10.04.2016) The UK Royal Navy is preparing to send submarines into the Arctic for the first time in nearly 10 years, local media said on Sunday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK navy officers are set to undergo training to navigate below ice and break through ice covers on a US submarine before being deployed to the Arctic, The Sunday Times Newspaper reported.
US experience will be used to prepare one Trafalgar-class submarine for work in the Arctic, Rear Admiral John Weale said, as quoted by the publication.
The experience will then be passed on to the rest of the UK fleet, he added.
The Royal Navy suspended Arctic patrols in 2007, after an explosion killed two operator mechanics on the HMS Tireless Trafalgar-class nuclear submarine that had been patrolling waters under the icecap.
In the 1980s, both the United Kingdom and the United States were actively tracing Soviet submarines in the Arctic.
