MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The foreign minister called for a structured negotiation process to resolve the conflict.

"The escalation of tensions in Nagorno-Karabakh is an important issue. And thanks to the efforts of Russia it eased a bit, but the region remains complicated and prone to conflict escalation," Burkhalter told a news conference after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Russia is one of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, along with the United States and France, which has been mediating the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement since 1992.

The latest wave of violence in Azerbaijan's breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, mostly inhabited by Armenians, intensified on April 2, leading to multiple casualties before Armenia and Azerbaijan reached a shaky ceasefire deal three days later. Russia has condemned the violence, calling for a peaceful settlement and urging both sides to observe the ceasefire.

Following the escalation, Lavrov held a number of meetings on the peaceful crisis resolution, including with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
