"My constant and loud advocacy must be matched by member states who alone have the power to swiftly bring to justice those who have committed crimes and to impose the strongest possible disciplinary and criminal sanctions," Ban stated.
"This is essential to restoring trust in the invaluable institution of peacekeeping, and providing justice and healing to the victims and affected communities," Ban added.
An internal UN report, leaked in the spring of last year, revealed that French troops deployed in the Central African Republic (CAR) as part of a 2013 peacekeeping mission had subjected boys to sexual abuse in exchange for food and money.
Additional claims of sexual abuse by peacekeepers in the CAR prompted the United Nations to launch a separate investigation in January.
