ANKARA (Sputnik) — On late Monday, media reported that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is outlawed in Ankara, staged an explosion in the Hani District of the Diyarbakir province.
"The members of the separatist terrorist organization [PKK]… on April 11 detonated a car bomb near the district gendarmerie and the military residence building in Hani, Diyarbakir province. As a result, one of our soldiers was killed and 39 were wounded, as well as six members of servicemen's families and two civilians, " the Turkish General Staff said in a statement.
Turkey's southeast is dominated by the Kurdish population, and the PKK has a strong presence there. Earlier this year, a number of major explosions occurred in Turkey, and Ankara believes that they might have links to the PKK.
In November, Ankara launched the anti-PKK campaign in Diyarbakir. A curfew entered into force the following month amid growing violence between the militants and the Turkish servicemen.
In March, Ankara declared an end to its large-scale operation, as a result of which some 300 PKK militants were killed, according to the Turkish General Staff.
