WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Yatsenyuk announced his resignation starting April 12 amid the ongoing parliamentary crisis in the country. The Petro Poroshenko Bloc has nominated speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Volodymyr Groysman for the post of Prime Minister.
"We are sending more military equipment…We certainly have to help Ukraine defend itself against any further Russian expansion into Ukraine," Durbin said on Tuesday when asked if the United States was taking any further steps amid the parliamentary upheaval.
The US senator added, however, that it is the responsibility of the government to protect its people and territory.
In 2015, the US Congress authorized the provision of lethal arms to Ukraine to defend against alleged Russian aggression. Moscow has repeatedly denied any involvement in Ukraine’s internal conflict and is among the signatories of the Minsk peace agreements.
The US administration has provided defensive equipment to Kiev, including armored personnel carriers, night vision goggles, and body armor, but has refused to outfit the nation with lethal weapons.
