MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A delegation of Russian lawmakers brought 21 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Syria during the most recent parliamentary visit, the delegation head said Wednesday.
"Our delegation worked in two stages. A part of our delegation with humanitarian cargo, 21 tonnes, first arrived in [the Syrian province of] Latakia. There in Latakia, we left 15 tonnes in the reconciliation center to transfer the food mainly to the besieged cities. We brought six tonnes of cargo directly to Damascus to hand over to the poor," Dmitry Sablin, a member of Russia’s upper house committee on defense and security, told a press conference.
The Russian lawmakers delegation traveled to Syria for the fourth time earlier in April.
The ceasefire in Syria, worked out by Russia and the United States, took effect on February 27 to facilitate humanitarian access to all besieged areas in the country, among other purposes.
