Major UK Conservative financial donors are preparing to fund a campaign supporting Britain's exit from the European Union at the amount of up to 5 million pounds ($7.1 million), The Telegraph reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the newspaper, the donations by the Midlands Industrial Council, which has been supporting the Conservatives for two decades, will be made proportionally in the next 10 weeks, and will amount to between 4 and 5 million pounds. The money are expected to be transferred to support the Grassroots Out (GO) movement, which is one of the groups supporting Brexit.

"I believe that significant sums will now go to Grassroots Movement – the umbrella organization – or Grassroots Out, either one," David Wall, the secretary of the Midlands Industrial Council told The Telegraph on Tuesday.

UK citizens are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the 27 European Union member states reached a deal in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.

Earlier this month, the UK government announced it would spend over nine million pounds of taxpayers' money to issue pro-EU leaflets, informing the Brits about major risks and dangers of Brexit. London mayor Boris Johnson and Eurosceptic cabinet members accused the government of "disgracefully" wasting the public money.
