WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US government alleges Sun tried for years to purchase carbon fiber for a source he identified as being in the Chinese military.
"The carbon fiber — which has many aerospace and defense applications — is strictly controlled, and Sun expressed a willingness to pay a premium to skirt US export laws," the statement quoted Assistant US Attorney General for National Security John Carlin as saying on Thursday.
After traveling to New York from China to finalize the deal this week, Sun paid tens of thousands of dollars to purchase two cases of the carbon fiber from undercover US law enforcement agents, according to the statement.
M60 carbon fiber requires a license for export to China for nuclear non-proliferation and anti-terrorism reasons.
Earlier on Thursday, the Justice Department indicted a US citizen, Szuhsiung Ho, for conspiracy to unlawfully engage and participate in the production and development of special nuclear material outside the United States at the direction of China’s state-owned nuclear energy company.
