MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – Executive President of the Nicaraguan Aqueduct and Sewer Company (Enacal) Erving Barreda said, as quoted by La Prensa on Friday, that the populations of central and southeastern Nicaragua must conserve water and recommended that people "avoid washing vehicles, sidewalks and streets for 15 days."
El Nino, a weather phenomenon which occurs every two to seven years, affects coastal Latin America, and has caused droughts in Nicaragua and other nations throughout the region. Recently Venezuela's President Maduro advised that his countrymen reduce energy due to low water levels at the country's hydropower stations; they were told to refrain from using blow dryers and air conditioners.
The El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a cycle of warm and cold temperatures of the tropical central and eastern Pacific Ocean. The warm phase of ENSO is called "El Nino," while the cool phase is referred to as "La Nina."
