Washington has sanctioned Khalifa Ghawi for undermining Libya's stability.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States has imposed sanctions on the prime minister and defense minister of the Libyan self-styled government in the capital city of Tripoli for undermining the country's stability, the US Treasury Department announced in a release on Tuesday.

"The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today sanctioned Khalifa Ghweil (Ghweil) pursuant to a new Executive Order…which imposes sanctions against individuals or entities that, among other things, threaten the peace, security, or stability of Libya or obstruct or undermine the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA)," the release said.

The Treasury noted that Ghweil was designated for actions threatening Libya’s security and stability, including through the supply of arms and for policies that impede the political transition to the GNA or a successor government.

According to the release, the designation complements the European Union’s sanctioning of Ghweil on April 1.

Since 2014, there have been two governments in the country, a self-styled and more influential National Salvation Government in the capital city of Tripoli, and Council of Deputies in the eastern town of Tobruk that won a parliamentary majority at the June 2014 elections and has been recognized by the international community. In December, they agreed to create a Government of National Accord to end the political struggle.
