According to the Ecuadorean ambassador to Russia, the country is interested in increasing exports to Russia.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Ecuador is interested in increasing product portfolio of its exports to Russia, Ecuadorean ambassador to Russia Julio Cesar Prado Espinosa told Sputnik.

"The flowers and bananas are star products, but a year and a half ago frozen fish, pulp of frozen fruit and broccoli entered [the Russian market] and we are going to try this year to enter Ecuadorean chocolate, considered the best in the world," the ambassador said.

The trade last year was affected by economic turmoil in both countries, according to him.

"The crisis brought us challenge to which we responded very well, so that the amount of [$1.4 billion] which we annually export to Russia will not be affected much. It has been reduced, but we still have a very high margin of profit," the ambassador said.

Russia and Ecuador have long maintained friendly and productive bilateral relations. In 2013, during Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, the two leaders signed a number of transport and energy agreements.

Moscow has enhanced its cooperation with Latin American countries after the European Union and the United States imposed a series of sanctions against Russia in 2014 over its alleged involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.
