MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Russian cabinet has endorsed an international deal to curb global warming, a statement on the government's website revealed on Wednesday.

"The Paris Agreement, reached on December 12, 2015 during the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change, was approved by the signed decree," the statement said.

The move comes several months after the pact was hammered out in December in Paris following weeks of intensive talks. Russia and other nations are due to officially sign it at a ceremony in New York on April 22, 2016.

The 196 nations that agreed the Paris climate deal now have until April 21, 2017 to ratify the 31-page document, which seeks to limit global average temperatures to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
