WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — FBI Director James Comey told the audience at the Aspen Security Forum in London that the agency paid more than he will earn in the remainder of his tenure at the FBI, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
The outlet explained that Comey’s salary is $180,000 per year, and there are seven years remaining in his term, putting the cost of the tool to at least $1.26 million.
The iPhone was used by Saeed Farook, a US citizen who, along with his wife, killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California on December 2, 2015.
Last month, the FBI asked a US federal court to withdraw a motion compelling Apple to assist the US government in bypassing security features on Farook’s phone. Apple had refused to assist the FBI, citing broad privacy concerns.
