WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The law seeks to address global hunger based on the premise that food insecurity is a threat to US national security as well as the international economy.
"This legislation will not only benefit our national security, it will also have a real, direct impact on the lives of children, mothers and families around the world," Isakson stated.
If approved, the measure will create an emergency food response fund with money allocated for disaster assistance. It will also coordinate US development programs to enhance agricultural productivity and local economies in areas of need.
The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations passed the bill last month.
