KAZAN (Sputnik) — The Olympic Games in South Korea’s PyeongChang in 2018 will be an excellent opportunity for Russia to win the Olympic gold in hockey, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday.
"In the modern history, Russian hockey players have never won the Olympic gold and the upcoming 2018 Games in [South] Korea are an excellent opportunity to achieve such a result, such a victory," Putin said at a meeting of the Sports Council.
In the last two winter Olympics – in Canada’s Vancouver in 2010 and in Russia’s Sochi in 2014 — the Russian hockey team left the tournament in quarterfinals. Russia has not won the Olympic gold for hockey since the 1992 Winter Games in France.
