BEIJING (Sputnik) – South Korea's Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Kim Hong-kyun arrived to Beijing on Friday to discuss the situation on the peninsula with his Chinese counterpart Wu Dawei, China's Foreign Ministry said.
"The Special Envoy of South Korea Kim Hong-kyun arrived in China to meet with the special representative of the Chinese government for Korean Peninsula Wu Dawei and to exchange opinions on the situation on the Korean peninsula," the ministry's spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said Friday.
Hua also voiced her hopes that cooperation between China and South Korea might contribute to the resolution of the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Tensions in the region escalated after North Korea successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test in early January and put a satellite into orbit a month later, violating UN Security Council resolutions and triggering condemnation from the international community.
