WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama has stated on Friday that his comments on the benefits for the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union are not aimed at influencing the outcome of the upcoming referendum on UK membership in the bloc.
"This is decision for the people of the United Kingdom to make. I am not coming here to fix any votes," Obama stated in a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister David Cameron in London.
The US president stressed the importance of the US-UK partnership for the success of NATO and other international institutions and initiatives in his op-ed published in The Daily Telegraph early on Friday.
UK nationals are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Prime Minister Cameron and the leaders of the 27 other EU member states reached a deal in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.
