MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Pyongyang finished construction of a third hydroelectric power station in North Korea near the border with China despite Western attempts "to suppress" the country's principles of self-reliance, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, said Friday.
"The completion of the first, second and third hydroelectric units of the Baekdu Songun Youth Power Station during the year inflicted a a serious blow to the United States and its allies, who with diabolical perseverance are aiming to strengthen sanctions against the DPRK and to suppress its aspirations and principles of self-development and self-reliance," Kim said, as quoted by North Korea’s Central News Agency (KCNA).
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula escalated after North Korea successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test in early January and put a satellite into orbit a month later, violating UN Security Council resolutions and triggering condemnation from the international community.
