MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin wished Russia's Jewish community a happy Passover; the holiday commemorates the Biblical Exodus.
"Passover is the most ancient and most honored holiday of Judaism followers. In its origins, it goes back to such an important event in the biblical story as the liberation from centuries of slavery of the Jewish people," Putin said in a telegram, as quoted by the Kremlin’s press service.
On Thursday, the Russian leader wished Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a happy Passover during their talks in Moscow.
Passover, which started on Friday night, marks the historical events that laid the foundations of Israelites as a free nation and their Exodus from Egypt. The religion of Judaism is based on the memories of the Exodus and the ensuing search for the Promised Land and the formation of an independent Jewish state.
