BERLIN (Sputnik) — Another ministerial meeting of the Normandy Four group of international mediators of the Ukrainian crisis is essential at the moment, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said Monday.
"It means that the heads of the foreign ministries of all four countries will meet at a certain point in time," the spokesman explained, answering a RIA Novosti question on the matter, without specifying a date for the meeting.
On Friday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said Paris and Berlin envisaged the possibility of a new Normandy Four group meeting at Germany's initiative in the near future.
The Kiev authorities launched a military operation against independence militias in Ukraine’s eastern in April 2014. The confrontation has claimed over 9,000 lives, according to UN estimates.
In February 2015, the leaders of the Normandy Four group, comprising Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine, worked out a ceasefire deal in Minsk later signed by Kiev and the Donbas militia.
