WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The text of the document says the Magnitsky Act "discredits the US legislature," and should be repealed because it was adopted due to lobby by "two frauds" wanted by the Russian law enforcement.
The petition has got 17,375 signatories two days after its creation on April 23. The authors of the document seek to collect 100,000 signatures by May 23.
Under the Magnitsky Act, the United States can sanction individuals it believes are responsible for the death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.
In response to the new sanctions, Russia imposed a travel ban on five former US officials, who have been connected to the reported torture program run by the Central Intelligence Agency after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States.
