Commemorating the feats of the Second World War is vital for the present and future generations amid attempts to rewrite the history, Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak told reporters at the "Spirit of Elbe" commemoration ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Elbe Day commemorates the linking of the Soviet and US Armies at the River Elbe in Germany on April 25, 1945, which was an important step toward ending the Second World War.

"I would like to underline that the fact that so many Russian and US citizens who remember the feat of our peoples have gathered here is extremely important not only for the present generation but even more for the future ones," Kislyak said. "It is especially important when there are the attempts to rewrite the history and to forget much of the heroic things done by the Soviet people."

Russian, US well as the delegations of the former Soviet Union states laid wreaths at the "Spirit of the Elbe" memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.

"I am very glad that there are many young people, both Russian and Americans here who learn about the feat of the fathers and grandfathers during such ceremonies," Kislyak said.

The US delegation was headed by Director of Russian Affairs at the US State Department Eric Green.

The memorial was opened in 1995 to mark the 40th anniversary of the historical meeting between the US and Soviet armies.
