Police Use Tear Gas to Disperse Protesters Near Turkish Parliament
13:50 GMT 26.04.2016 (Updated: 13:51 GMT 26.04.2016) Turkish police used tear gas to disperse protesters who have gathered near the Turkish parliament building on Tuesday protesting against the statement of Turkish Parliament Speaker Ismail Kahraman, who called for the abandonment of the secular constitution, local media reported.
ANKARA (Sputnik) — On Monday, Kahraman said that the new constitution should not follow the principle of the separation of government from religious institutions and needs to scrap secularism from its constitution in favor of Islamic principles, thus causing sharp criticism from the opposition.
According to the DHA news outlet, the police banned the rally near the parliament building and demanded the crowd to disperse. After the demonstrators refused to obey, the police had to use tear gas. Several people were arrested.
