MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear ambitions are possible, but relations between Washington and Pyongyang are complicating the situation, Russia's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency said Wednesday.
“Such a possibility [of renewing talks on North Korea’s nuclear issue] has always existed and we are calling for this. The longer nuclear explosions continue in North Korea, the more difficult it will be to return to the negotiations process because this escalates the situation and attracts outside regional forces into the region and leads to the militarization of the region,” Vladimir Voronkov said.
He added that relations between North Korea and the United States complicate the situation.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula escalated after North Korea successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test in early January and put a satellite into orbit a month later, violating UN Security Council resolutions and triggering condemnation from the international community.
