The security situation in Afghanistan has significantly worsened in the last months, with the violent Islamist group Taliban carrying out offensives on the country’s big cities.
In late September, the militants briefly captured the provincial capital, Kunduz — home to some 300,000 people — and attempted to seize the city of Ghazni, south of Kabul, in October.
