Therefore local authorities came up with a smart and simple idea on how to save motorists from the heat. They have installed temporary protective green covers on the streets at regular intervals, just above traffic lights to provide shade to drivers, so they can stop there for some time and avoid the harsh rays of the sun.
Incidentally this measure turned out to keep drivers from running red lights, according to media reports. Now motorists are choosing to wait under the shades for an extra moment, till the light turns green.
India is currently facing an extreme heat wave and drought, which has already affected 330 million people this year, according to government figures. The situation is particularly severe in Mahashtra state, where Nagpur is located.
