Russia intends to launch two satellites in 2018 using the newly-built Vostochny Cosmodrome. On Thursday, the first launch from the space center took place.

VOSTOCHNY COSMODROME (Sputnik) – The launch of the Kanopus and Meteor satellites from Russia’s newly-built Vostochny Cosmodrome will take place in the second half of 2018, Roscosmos head Igor Komarov said Thursday.

“We are planning two launches from Vostochny in the second half of 2018. During the first [launch], the Konopus and Meteor space satellites will be orbited, as well as other useful cargoes,” Komarov said.

On Thursday, Russia successfully conducted the first launch from the newly-built Vostochny space center, putting three satellites aboard a Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket to orbit.
