Turkey Suffers Sharpest Monthly Drop in Foreign Visitors Since 2006
Turkey saw the sharpest drop in the number of foreign visitors last March since October 2006, with 13 percent fewer arrivals on average compared to the same period last year, official data showed Thursday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry figures revealed that the number of Russian tourists coming to Turkey decreased by almost 60 percent month-on-month.
The same report showed that the number of arrivals from Germany dropped 17 percent amid a deteriorating security situation in Turkey.
Turkey has been hit by a series of terrorist attacks since last year, including in its capital Ankara and the largest city of Istanbul, where 12 Germans were killed in January alone.
A split between Moscow and Ankara over the downing of a Russian warplane by a Turkish fighter jet over Syria last November led to the cancellation of charter flights between the countries.
