US Human Rights Activists to Meet With EU Parliament on Odessa Probe
19:59 GMT 29.04.2016 (Updated: 20:29 GMT 29.04.2016) US human rights activists will travel to Brussels, Belgium next week to urge the European Parliament to investigate the 2014 Trade Union Building fire in Odessa, the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC) Co-Coordinator Joe Lombardo told Sputnik on Friday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — UNAC announced last week that it is sending a delegation of activists to observe the May 2 memorial in Odessa.
"The delegation will be there for several days. One member will be going with a leader of the Mother’s Committee [for May 2] to Brussels on Tuesday to speak to the European Parliament about conducting an investigation into the events of May 2, 2014," Lombardo said.
The US State Department has expressed support for the commemoration.
Earlier in April, the US State Department said in its annual human rights report that Ukrainian government’s failure to investigate the Odessa deaths and other abuses has fostered a climate of impunity in the country.
