GENEVA (Sputnik) – Al Hussein called for the conflicting parties to step back so as not to return “to all-out war.”
“In short, the violence is soaring back to the levels we saw prior to the cessation of hostilities. There are deeply disturbing reports of military build-ups indicating preparations for a lethal escalation,” Al Hussein said.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the United States and Russia to press their respective allies in Syria to honor the fraying ceasefire.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.
In February, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a ceasefire in Syria, which took effect the same month.
