MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to Russia’s Naval Doctrine, Yasen-class submarines will become the main multipurpose nuclear-powered subs in the Russian Navy.
"The missile hit the training target with high accuracy," Capt. Vadim Serga said, adding that the submarine’s crew has demonstrated "high professionalism and training" during preparations for the firing drills.
General Director of Russia’s shipbuilding company Sevmash, Mikhail Budnichenko, announced in December that the company will begin the construction of two nuclear submarines, one Borei-class (project 955) and a Yasen-class (project 885) in 2016.
By 2020, the Russian Navy plans to operate a total of eight Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarines.
