The explosion reportedly shook the mostly Shiite-populated Samawah city earlier in the day.
"The terrorist attack killed 20 people and left a significant number of injured," Alsumaria television channel quoted the source as saying.
According to the channel, the Muthanna province, where the attack happened, has been a safe region in the past few years.
None of the terrorist groups has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
