MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A Somali refugee has set herself on fire at the Australia-run detention center in Nauru days after a similar incident claimed the life of an Iranian migrant, local media reported Monday.
The 21-year old refugee has suffered severe burns and is currently being treated by Australian medics on the island, the Australian ABC News broadcaster said.
On Friday, the Iranian refugee died after setting himself alight when UN officials were visiting the refugee detention facilities on Nauru, where over 450 refugees are waiting for their asylum applications to be processed by Australia.
Migrants, including young children, who arrive in Australia to seek refuge are transferred to offshore detention camps with reportedly inhumane conditions on the remote islands of Manus and Nauru in the Pacific Ocean.
