GENEVA (Sputnik) — UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Monday he was planning to call on Russia to promote ceasefire in Syria during his upcoming visit to Moscow.
"There is no excuse for not finding, again, and reinvigorating and reinstalling and re-implementing what has been the only strong message the Syrian people have heard from all of us: that it’s possible to have talks when finally the cessation of hostilities is reducing the violence on them. Tomorrow, as we discussed, I am going to Moscow and the message will be exactly the same," he said at a press briefing in Geneva.
A ceasefire brokered by Russia and the United States has been in place in parts of Syria since late February. De Mistura said last week that the truce was holding but barely and urged the two powers to save the peace process. A new truce was hammered out last Friday for Damascus and the northern Latakia province.
