On Sunday, Stoltenberg said in an interview with the German Die Welt newspaper that the NATO members did not seek any confrontation or another Cold War with Russia but would not abandon its nuclear strategy.

"NATO is not seeking confrontation with Russia, Cold War and arms race, Stoltenberg said, moving the alliance's military structures toward Russian borders," Alexei Pushkov, the head of the foreign affairs committee of the lower house of the Russian parliament, wrote on his Twitter account.

Over the past two years, NATO has carried out a number of large-scale military exercises along the alliance's eastern flank, bordering Russia. Moscow has warned against NATO’s increased military buildup along its border, stating that it is provocative and threatens regional and global stability.
