In February, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban decided to hold a referendum on the EU mandatory quotas on refugee relocation, under which the country would be obliged to take in 2,300 refugees.
"In September-early October, the referendum may take place…. the government wants to inform people so that more people are able to make a decision," Head of Cabinet of the Prime Minister Antal Rogan was quoted as saying by the Heti Vilaggazdasag newspaper to a news conference, as he passed the Curia's decision to the National Electoral Committee.
The final question put to the electorate will be weather they want the European Union to "require the compulsory resettlement of non-Hungarian citizens to Hungary without authorization by the parliament."
Last year, the European Commission called on EU member states to redistribute 160,000 asylum seekers from Africa and the Middle East who had arrived to Europe. Brussels laid out a quota system for refuge adoption that took into account social and economic indicators of each country.
Earlier on Tuesday, reports emerged in the media that Brussels would sanction the EU states which would be avoiding the refugee resettlement under the quotas.
