BEIJING (Sputnik) — Russia offers to China to discuss a project on the delivery of fresh water from Russia's Altai Territory through Kazakhstan, the Russian agricultural minister said.
"We are ready to propose a project for the transfer of fresh water from the Altai Territory of Russia through Kazakhstan to the arid Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. In the near future, we will hold consultations with our colleagues from Kazakhstan on this issue," Alexander Tkachev said during the meeting with Chinese counterpart Han Changfu.

Over the recent years, China's Xinjiang has been approaching a water crisis as the consumption of pure water in the region almost surpasses the available water resources, according to the regional government.

Currently, rapid evacuation of spring floods at the major reservoirs in the Altai region is being underway, and in order to use water resources more efficiently, they could be delivered to China trough Kazakhstan, the agriculture ministry told RIA Novosti.
