HMEYMIM AIRBASE (Syria), (Sputnik) — The Russian Aerospace Forces do not have any necessity to open additional air facilities in Syria, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Wednesday.
"There is absolutely no need for this. It is even economically unviable," Konashenkov told reporters asked if there were plans to open new Russian airbases in Syria.
He added that all aircraft deployed at the Russian Hmeymim airbase can reach any area in the war-torn country.
According to the spokesman, the airbase is fully autonomous and maintained solely with Russia's fuel, ammunition and logistical support.
The Hmeymim airbase began operations in September 2015, when Russia started its counter-terrorist aerial campaign in Syria.
