MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Immortal Regiment is a patriotic initiative that marks the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945. During the marches, people carry photographs of their ancestors, who participated in World War II.
"This is the first campaign which will take place in Spain… We expect that many people will take part," Roman Demyan, a member of Blagoe Delo, a charity association, told RIA Novosti.
The event will not only commemorate those who fought in World War II, but also those who took part in the Spanish Civil War.
This year, the Immortal Regiment campaign will take place in Russia, Estonia, Austria, the United States and, Switzerland among others.
Some 12 million people have participated in the 2015 Immortal Regiment march throughout Russia, with Russian President Vladimir Putin joining a column of people in Moscow carrying portraits of their relatives who fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
