Erdogan Welcomes PM Davutoglu's Resignation, Defends Presidential System
14:31 GMT 06.05.2016 (Updated: 14:33 GMT 06.05.2016) Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s upcoming resignation will benefit the country and will not lead to a governing crisis, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Davutoglu confirmed media reports on Thursday that he would step down from the post of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) leader and would not run for prime minister at a May 22 extraordinary meeting of party leaders.
"I believe PM Davutoglu's decision will be for the better of Turkey and our nation," Erdogan was quoted as saying by the Daily Sabah's English-language Twitter account.
He contended that a new constitution and a presidential ruling system presented an "urgent requirement" and was not his "personal agenda."
The opposition described Davutoglu’s resignation as a "coup" designed for Erdogan to his consolidate power. Erdogan is reportedly expected to pick Davutoglu's successor to lead his drive for a new constitution that favors an executive system of government.
