With Scandinavian films steadily gaining ground abroad, the Bonnier Group-owned Swedish film production giant Svensk Filmindustri is rebranding to SF Studios and is focusing on films in English in an attempt to dive deeper into the international market.

Today, digital services stand for 40 percent of SF Studios' turnover, whereas the remaining 30 percent come from movie distribution and yet another 30 percent from own productions. The ambition is now to make more movies on their own, mainly in English in order to penetrate into the international market.

"We have investigated the whole production chain of the film industry and how the largest actors operate and define their role. It turns out that the major international studios work with all links of the chain, and we plan to do accordingly" CEO Jonas Fors disclosed his plans to Dagens Industri.

Currently, SF Studios is working on the film about the tennis star Bjorn Borg "Borg vs McEnroe" directed by Janus Metz, the new world epic "The Emigrants" based on Vilhelm Moberg's eponymous classic and directed by Daniel Espinosa, as well as "Horizon Line" directed by Babak Najafi.

"We have a plethora of amazing creators and concepts in the Nordic region, such as the well-established ‘Scandi noir' genre. Now we can help production companies and creative professionals to work on an international scale, Jonas Fors said.

The English-language films are expected to premiere in 2017 and 2018 respectively and have a budget of up to 300 million krona (roughly 40 million dollars), compared with an average budget for a Swedish film of 19 million krona (2.5 million dollars).

"We want to become an alternative to the American film system with budgets of up to 100 million dollars per film, but with significant creative obstacles as well. We want to produce films on an international level, but with a higher tone," Fors told Dagens Industri.

Founded in 1919, Svensk Filmindustri is one of Sweden's oldest film producers, distributors and movie theatre chains. The company is best known for producing the majority of Ingmar Bergman's works as well as film adaptations of Astrid Lindgren's children books.

The Bonnier Group is a privately held Swedish media group of 175 companies operating in 15 countries. It is controlled by the Bonnier family and nets a yearly revenue of 4 billion dollars.
