WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Twenty-five additional Marines have arrived at the US embassy in Baghdad, Iraq at the request of the US Department of State, local media reported on Friday.
The US authorities' concerns over security have risen after protesters broke through Iraqi capital city’s "Green Zone", which includes the location of the American embassy, CNN reported citing anonymous US officials.
The so-called Green Zone in the center of the Iraqi capital is housing government buildings and foreign missions. The territory was closed to the Iraqi people over security concerns after the invasion of coalition forces led by the United States and the United Kingdom in 2003.
On April 26, protesters entered the Green Zone and broke into the Iraqi parliament, demanding reforms of the political quota system.
More demonstrations are likely to take place in Baghdad on Friday, according to media reports.
