WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A new financial report states that major US defense corporations are anticipating a flood of high-end weapons systems sales to Japan, Philippines, South Korea and Vietnam over alleged China threats in the South China Sea, according to US media reports.
"[T]his could mean good things for high-end US systems from… nations such as Japan and South Korea, it has also had an early effect on smaller nations… such as Vietnam, which has expressed growing interest in the US kit," Defense News reported on Friday, citing the new report from Guggenheim Securities.
Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and other nations in the region were building up their armed forces and buying new advanced weapons systems in reaction to Beijing’s alleged aggressive moves in defending its claim to sovereignty over islands in the South China Sea, Guggenheim Securities noted in its report.
"Countries in Asia continue to buy a mix of advanced US systems (such as Northrop Grumman’s Global Hawk in Japan) and munitions (Harpoon missiles for South Korea)," the report pointed out.
Guggenheim Securities observed that US foreign military sales around the world remained strong and were likely to exceed their 2015 levels.
